Your AI Conversations Are Not Private. Here's Proof.

Let's go through the actual privacy policies of every major AI service. Not summaries. Not marketing language. The actual terms.

OpenAI (ChatGPT)

From OpenAI's privacy policy:

"We may use Content to provide, maintain, develop, and improve our Services."

Translation: Your conversations may be used to train future models.

"We may also use Content...to comply with applicable law, to enforce our terms, and to prevent abuse."

Translation: OpenAI employees can access your conversations.

The opt-out exists — buried in Settings → Data Controls → "Improve the model for everyone" toggle. Most users never find it. Even with it off, conversations are still stored on OpenAI's servers.

Google (Gemini)

From Google's Gemini privacy notice:

"Human reviewers read, annotate, and process your Gemini Apps conversations."

This is not ambiguous. Human beings at Google read your Gemini conversations. They do this for "quality and safety" purposes. Your conversations are retained for up to three years.

Gemini conversations are linked to your Google account — the same account connected to your Gmail, YouTube history, location data, and search history.

Anthropic (Claude)

From Anthropic's privacy policy:

"We may use Inputs and Outputs to...detect, prevent, and address...safety concerns."

Translation: Anthropic can review your Claude conversations for safety research.

Claude conversations are logged and stored. The retention period and access controls are governed by Anthropic's internal policies — not yours.

Microsoft (Copilot)

Microsoft Copilot processes data through Azure. For enterprise users, your organization's IT administrators can access Copilot interaction logs. For consumer users, Microsoft's standard data collection applies — which includes using data to "improve products and services."

What "Delete" Really Means

When you delete a conversation in ChatGPT, the UI removes it from your view. But:

• OpenAI's systems may retain the data for up to 30 days
• Backups and logs may persist longer
• Data that was used for training before deletion cannot be "untrained"

"Delete" in cloud AI means "hide from you." It does not mean "erase from existence."
